8 if you want it, own it.
âThe words guilty and pleasure shouldnât be used in a sentence together.â Jill Robbins hit it on the money for her sure in her blog post she wrote before she turned 51. She said, âIf youâre going to like something, just freaking like it. Unless itâs harmful or illegal, enjoy it and own it. You donât necessarily have to tell everyone what your pleasures are but you probably shouldnât feel guilty about them.â
One of my secret pleasures had been spending hours binge-watching old seasons of âGilmore Girls.â I have seen every episode at least two to three times. I can quote Loralei Gilmore better than Loralei Gilmore can. When household chores were waiting or time would have been better spent getting outside and exercising or washing clothes, I was anxiously huddled in front of my electronic device wondering if Luke and Loralei would ever get together or if Logan and Rory would stay together.
I just couldnât help myself. But I didnât tell anyone I was doing it, even after I got good and grown, if I was being lazy and watching, and heard my dad or someone else come into the building, I would jump and throw my device under something.
Crazy right? I have moved on to reading books again, and have curbed my movie binge-watching. But I have to laugh. I was coming up with excuses and hiding my âpleasureâ when there really was no point.
Like Jill said, unless it is something illegal or harmful, own up to your pleasure, but donât excuse it or explain it away.
This principle can be applied, like any of the other pieces of advice or words of wisdom shared here, to anyone of any age. I just picked 50 because, well, this has been the year of being 50 for the first time, and it is during a pandemic nonetheless.
I should add a little something here. It is a pet peeve of mine really. If you are going to do something, if you are going to enjoy something, if you are going to be passionate about something â be accountable. Donât make excuses, donât point fingers, donât try to hide it.
In todayâs society, no one, it seems, wants to take full accountability for anything anymore, especially politicians â just saying. It is your life. It is your thing. Own it.
